1. Introduction

Welcome to BooFlix. BooFlix is a movie tracking application that helps users track scary movies they watch leading up to Halloween. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use our mobile application and web services.

By using BooFlix, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

Optional Account Registration:

• Email Address: If you choose to create an account, we collect your email address for authentication purposes
• Password: We collect and securely store your password (encrypted) for account access
• Anonymous Accounts: You can use BooFlix with an anonymous account without providing any personal information

Movie Data

We collect and store the following information about your movie preferences and viewing habits:

• Movie titles you've added to your library
• Movies you've marked as watched and the dates you watched them
• Your ratings for movies
• Movies you've marked as "must watch"
• Movies you've indicated you own
• Notes you add about movies
• Streaming service preferences

Automatically Collected Information

Usage Data:

• App usage patterns and interactions
• Error logs and crash reports
• Device type and operating system
• App version and session duration

Analytics: We use Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage statistics to improve our app.

3. Sharing Your List With Other Users

Publishing your list is optional and off by default. Nothing you record in BooFlix is visible to anyone else unless you turn it on.

What is shared when you publish

• A display name you choose. Your email address is never shown to other users.
• The movies in your library — titles, release years and posters.
• How many movies you have.

What is never shared

• Your watch history and the dates you watched anything. This stays private even when your list is published.
• Your ratings, notes, and “must watch” marks.
• Your email address.
• Anyone you have hidden. Blocking is private to you.

You can unpublish at any time in Settings, which removes your list and display name from other users' view. Anonymous accounts cannot publish a list.

Aggregate statistics

BooFlix shows totals such as how many people have a film in their library and how many times a film has been watched. These totals are counted across all libraries, including private ones.

These are totals only. They contain no names, no user identifiers, and no way to work out who has what. A private library contributes to a number and nothing else — publishing your list is the only thing that ever attributes anything to you.

Reports and moderation

If you report another user, we store your account identifier alongside the report so we can act on it and prevent abuse of the reporting system. Reports are visible only to our moderators — never to the person you reported.

4. Movie Information From The Movie Database (TMDB)

When you search for a movie, we send your search text to The Movie Database (TMDB) through our servers in order to return matching titles, posters, cast information and streaming availability. Your account identity is not sent to TMDB.

We store a copy of the movie details we retrieve so the app does not have to ask again. Streaming availability is requested for the region you choose in Settings.

This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. TMDB's own privacy policy is available at themoviedb.org/privacy-policy.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information for the following purposes:

1. Service Delivery: To provide, maintain, and improve the BooFlix app functionality
2. Data Synchronization: To sync your movie data across multiple devices
3. Account Management: To authenticate users and manage account access
4. App Improvement: To analyze usage patterns and improve app features
5. Error Tracking: To identify and fix technical issues
6. User Support: To respond to your questions and provide customer support
7. Community Features: To show your list to other users if, and only if, you have chosen to publish it
8. Aggregate Statistics: To count how many people have or have watched a film, without identifying anyone

6. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored using Google Firebase services (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Analytics). We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information, including encryption of passwords, secure data transmission using HTTPS, and regular security updates.

7. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. We may share your information only with service providers (like Google/Firebase for hosting), for legal requirements, or safety and protection.

8. Your Rights and Choices

• View Your Data: You can access your movie data within the app at any time
• Export Your Data: You can export your movie library and watch history
• Delete Your Data: You can delete individual movies or your entire account
• Modify Your Data: You can update your movie ratings and preferences
• Publish or Unpublish: You control whether your list is visible to others, and you can change your mind at any time in Settings
• Change Your Display Name: At any time, in Settings
• Hide Other Users: You can hide anyone's list from your view immediately, and unhide them later
• Report Content: You can report a list or display name; we review reports within 24 hours
